Gravitational Wave Background of Neutron Star-White Dwarf Binaries
نویسنده
چکیده
We discuss the stochastic background of gravitational waves from ultra compact neutron star-white dwarf (NS-WD) binaries at cosmological distances. Under the assumption that accreting neutron stars and donor white dwarf stars form most of the low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), our calculation makes use of recent results related to the luminosity function determined from X-ray observations. Even after accounting for detached NS-WD binaries not captured in X-ray data, the NS-WD background is at least an order of magnitude below that due to extragalactic white dwarf-white dwarf binaries and below the detectability level of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) at frequencies between 10 Hz and 10 Hz. While the extragalactic background is unlikely to be detected, we suggest that around one to ten galactic NS-WD binaries may be resolved with LISA such that their positions are determined to an accuracy of several degrees on the sky.

The Probability Distribution of Binary Pulsar Coalescence Rate Estimates. Ii. Neutron Star–white Dwarf Binaries
We consider the statistics of pulsar binaries with white dwarf companions (NS−WD). Using the statistical analysis method developed by Kim et al. (2003) we calculate the Galactic coalescence rate of NS−WD binaries due to gravitational-wave emission. We find that the most likely values for the total Galactic coalescence rate (Rtot) of NS−WD binaries lie in the range 0.2–10 Myr depending on differ...
متن کاملGravitational waves from cosmological compact binaries
We consider gravitational waves emitted by various populations of compact binaries at cosmological distances. We use population synthesis models to characterize the properties of double neutron stars, double black holes and double white dwarf binaries as well as white dwarf-neutron star, white dwarf-black hole and black hole-neutron star systems. We use the observationally determined cosmic sta...
متن کاملPopulation boundaries for Neutron star-White Dwarf binaries in LISA’s amplitude-frequency domain
In an earlier investigation, we proposed population boundaries for both inspiralling and masstransferring double white dwarf (DWD) systems in the distance independent “absolute” amplitudefrequency domain of the proposed space-based gravitational-wave (GW) detector, LISA. The massradius relationship of individual white dwarf stars, in combination with the constraints imposed by Roche geometries,...

Pulsars in close, eccentric binary systems are usually assumed to have another neutron star as a companion. These double neutron star binaries have proven to be the best laboratories for experimental General Relativity and are the most secure candidates for gravitational wave interferometers. We present deep B, V , and R images of the field containing the eccentric binary pulsar system PSR B230...
